 | item: The film follows him through basic training and into the paratroops, where he becomes an unlikely hero. Griffith brings an engaging glee to the role of this likable bumpkin, whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is impervious to insult. Ask him to clean the latrines and he rigs the toilet seats to stand up and salute. A solid supporting cast includes Griffith's future sidekick, Don Knotts; Nick Adams; and, most notably, the hilariously sullen Myron McCormick. Andy Griffith burst to stardom with this surprisingly funny film adaptation of the Broadway comedy (by, of all people, Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame). Griffith plays a hillbilly who is drafted into the army where, among other things, he has to wear shoes regularly for the first time. --Marshall Fine It arrived in a reasonable amount... see description |

 | item: It sure would be nice if this movie were to become available on DVD or
Blu-Ray it it's original theatrical widescreen release. Remastered
sound and picture, if necessary, would be great, too. This is one of
Paul Newman's best films. Looking forward to the day. I never saw the Leonard Maltin review that's being referenced in the comments here, but I have to agree that this is one terrific movie. It's long been a favorite due to the intricasies of the story, the terrific acting all around, and the nuances that make it fun to watch over and over again. I also wish it could be had in DVD format. One of Paul Newman's better "tongue in cheek" movies. Brought back fond memories of military service and some of the higher echelon's behavior. Would like to see this movie in a DVD format. Thi... see description |
